The French Agency for Food, Environmental and Occupational Health & Safety ( ANSES) was created on 1 July 2010. ANSES is a public administrative body accountable to the French Ministries of Health, Agriculture, the Environment, Labour and Consumer Affairs.

ANSES conducts missions in the areas of surveillance, expert appraisal, research and reference in a wide range of fields including human health, animal health and welfare, and plant health. The Agency provides a cross-functional perspective on health issues when assessing health risks and benefits, often through the lens of the human and social sciences. It assesses all the risks (chemical, biological, physical, etc.) to which a person may be exposed, intentionally or otherwise, at all ages and times of their life, whether at work, while travelling, while engaging in leisure activities, or via their food.

ANSES is also the competent authority in France in the field of veterinary medicinal products. It assesses pesticides, biocides and chemical products before they can be placed on the market under the European REACh Regulation. It issues marketing authorisations, after assessment, for plant protection products, fertilisers and growing media, and their adjuvants.
